Constraint Detection (Five-Layer Scan)
When you need this method
You want to judge the quality of a B2B software business, as a leadership team, investor or board member, and are drowning in individual observations. Without structure, the discussion goes to the loudest opinion instead of the limiting factor. The decisive question is: what does the company win on, and which single weakness currently caps everything else?
Approach
- 1Apply the maturity gate first: clarify stage and business-model mode so the scan does not produce false precision.
- 2Rate each of the five layers with a traffic light, a one-sentence rationale and an honest confidence level.
- 3Report two labels separately: the leading strength (highest positive contribution) and the constraint (biggest weakness).
- 4Name tensions between layers, such as strong stickiness with weak pricing power.
- 5Direct action at the constraint first, not at the layer that is already strong.
Typical application
A typical case: a board has debated a B2B SaaS company's growth strategy for months, each meeting with a different focus. The scan produces clear structure: strong, regulation-backed demand as the leading strength, but monetization without a scaling value metric as the constraint. The discussion productively narrows to one question: how does existing pull get translated into margin? Further growth initiatives are parked until the constraint is addressed.
Limits and counter-indications
The scan describes business quality and the constraint; as a predictor of buyer type, this method family was refuted in a blind test. The layers are not fully independent of each other, especially on the right side of the stack. For private companies, economics and compound often rest on inference; the confidence rating is mandatory, not decorative.
How to measure impact
A traffic light with confidence per layer; as output, the two labels of leading strength and constraint, and how they shift over time.
