# The Value Equation

> Value as a formula: (dream outcome × perceived likelihood of achievement) divided by (time delay × customer effort and sacrifice). The defensible position sits in the denominator, delivering faster and with less effort is operationally hard and therefore copy-resistant.

## Problem

Your offer or copy fails to convince even though the promise is big. Most vendors optimize only the numerator, bigger promises, more testimonials and leave the denominator untouched: the time until the first result and the effort the customer has to carry themselves.

## Approach

1. Name the target customer's actual dream outcome, the result, not the feature.
2. Raise the perceived likelihood of achievement: track record, references, verifiable evidence.
3. Systematically shorten the time to a first tangible result, deliver an early interim win.
4. Drive the customer's effort and sacrifice toward zero: preconfigured workflows, templates, guided implementation.
5. Audit the offer and the messaging along all four variables, not just the promise.

## Example

A typical case: a B2B SaaS with a multi-week implementation loses trials even though the end result convinces. Instead of inflating the promise, the team works on the denominator: a preconfigured starter package delivers a visible interim result in week one, and the onboarding team takes over the most laborious setup steps. The purchase decision gets easier because the result becomes tangible sooner and with less customer effort and precisely that delivery capability is hard for competitors to copy.

## Limits

The formula is a thinking structure, not a measurement instrument, the variables cannot be quantified precisely. It comes from a direct-response context; in complex B2B with a buying committee it replaces neither qualification nor positioning. Inflating the numerator without being able to deliver damages trust for good.

## Metric

A suitable metric is time-to-first-value: the time from purchase to the first demonstrable customer result, complemented by the implementation effort on the customer side.
