# Minimizing Need-to-Believes

> Every belief a buyer must adopt before purchasing lowers conversion. The goal is an offer and a message that require zero to one leaps of faith, the rest is cleared away through evidence, structure, or honest admission.

## Problem

Your message demands several leaps of faith at once: that the problem matters, that your category is the right solution, and that you of all vendors can deliver it. Every additional leap costs conversion, in the trial as much as on the landing page.

## Approach

1. List every belief a buyer must hold to purchase from you.
2. Restructure message and offer so that ideally only one leap of faith remains.
3. Address remaining doubts with evidence rather than claims: references, verifiable results, trials.
4. Name weaknesses proactively yourself (damaging admission), a self-declared weakness strengthens the credibility of everything else.
5. If two leaps of faith are unavoidable, split the communication into stages instead of demanding everything in one step.

## Example

A typical case: a young B2B SaaS in a new product category implicitly demands three beliefs from prospects, the category makes sense, the approach works, and the young team can deliver. Trial conversion stays weak. The team separates category-building (content, case descriptions) from product selling and reduces the purchase decision to a single testable belief that the trial itself proves. Activation friction drops because nothing has to be believed that can be shown.

## Limits

Zero leaps of faith are rarely achievable for genuinely novel products, then it becomes a question of sequencing, not elimination. The method is no substitute for substance: promising evidence and failing to deliver worsens the trust problem. In enterprise sales, formal review steps (security, procurement) remain that cannot be communicated away.

## Metric

Track conversion at the point of the biggest leap of faith, landing page to trial, or trial to purchase, before and after simplifying the message.

- Choice under Conflict: The Dynamics of Deferred Decision — Psychological Science 3(6) (Amos Tversky, Eldar Shafir), 1992 · academic and scholarly literature · supports the underlying mechanism. Establishes that under high internal conflict decision makers tend to defer or keep searching rather than choose the best available option, meaning unresolved uncertainty delays the decision rather than merely worsening it. - The Market for "Lemons": Quality Uncertainty and the Market Mechanism — The Quarterly Journal of Economics 84(3) (George A. Akerlof), 1970 · academic and scholarly literature · supports the underlying mechanism. Derives from theory that, where quality cannot be verified, buyers assume the average and therefore discount unsupported promises, until good sellers are driven out of the market. The source is an economic model with illustrative examples, not empirical evidence that every unsupported claim lowers price or win probability. (https://www.sfu.ca/~allen/Ackerlof.pdf)
